1. If elected as a member of Congress, define what it means to be a representative? Who or what do you represent?
A good representative is a person who always stays in touch with the thoughts and concerns of those in his or her district. One of the commitments I would make to the voters of my district would be to hold more town hall meetings than anyone in Florida's federal delegation. I believe that the main reason we have so many problems in Washington is because Congress isn't listening to what's being discussed around our kitchen tables. I would represent Florida to Washington, not Washington to Florida.
2. What is the proper role of government?
The proper role of government is to protect our inalienable rights, including our lives, our liberty and our pursuit of happiness.
3. Where does government get is power and why does that matter?
Government derives its power from the people. The federal government in particular derives its power from the people and from the states. This is important to know because, as the Tenth Amendment makes clear, powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states and/or the people.
4. What is the role of the Constitution?
The role of the Constitution is to protect our individual liberties and rights and also to list the powers that have been delegated to the federal government. If a power has not been specifically delegated to the federal government by the Constitution, then that power belongs to the states and/or the people.
No matter if you fall within the right wing, left wing or somewhere in between, it's important to have a firm grasp of American political history and to study the works of Alexis de Tocqueville, a French writer and an early observer of American political culture during the early 1800s. He identified several factors that influenced America's success - abundant and fertile land, countless opportunities for people to acquire land and make a living, lack of a federal aristocracy that blocked the ambitious and the independent spirit encouraged by frontier living.
